Hillary Clinton has revealed she decided to start wearing her trademark pantsuits after upskirt photos were taken of her when she was First Lady and used in a lingerie ad.
During a 1995 state visit to Brazil, the then First Lady discussed how she was wearing a cream skirt at an event and photographers began shooting pictures of her from below.
"I was sitting on a couch, and the press was let in," the former presidential candidate told CBS Sunday Morning's Norah O'Donnell. "There were a bunch of them shooting up."
According to reports, some photos from that trip, in which Clinton's underwear was allegedly visible, were later used in an advertisement for a Brazilian lingerie brand.
"All of a sudden the White House gets alerted to these billboards that show me sitting down—I thought my legs were together—but the way it's shot, it's sort of suggestive," Clinton said.
"And then I also began to have the experience of having photographers all the time," she continued.
Clinton made the revelations on CBS News while promoting her and daughter Chelsea's upcoming Apple TV+ docuseries, Gutsy. "I'd be on a stage, I'd be climbing stairs—and they'd be below me. I just couldn't deal with it, so I started wearing pants."
Chelsea Clinton, 42, interjected to say she had only heard this story recently and described the situation as "so creepy."
CBS showed newspaper cuttings from the 1995 state visit and reports that Brazilian lingerie company DuLoren used an image of a seated Clinton in which you can see up her skirt, with the caption: "A tribute to one of the most important women of the decade."
According to The Guardian, the company behind the advertisement said it "was meant as a compliment" to Clinton but was then later pulled from circulation.
In their upcoming series, the Clinton women interview skilled and determined women from all walks of life and some of those featured include Megan Thee Stallion, Gloria Steinem, Kim Kardashian, Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes and more.
In addition to serving as first lady and secretary of state, Hillary was elected to the U.S. Senate representing New York in 2000. She lost to Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, though she did win the popular vote.
As well as Gutsy, it was announced last month that Chelsea and Hillary will be in the clubhouse when Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen returns from summer hiatus.
