On Memorial Day, federal services such as USPS mail delivery will be unavailable and banks will be closed. But will stores be open on Memorial Day?

Memorial Day, a holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honors those who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, the holiday originated in the years following the Civil War and became a federal holiday in 1971.

On federal holidays, non-essential federal services close, but private businesses generally stay open. Most stores will therefore be open on Memorial Day, though not all of them.

Costco is closed on Memorial Day, as well as New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Target stores will be open on Memorial Day but hours will vary by location. Walmart will also be open following regular business hours, which also vary by store.

Most grocery stores will be open on Memorial Day, such as Kmart, Kroger, and Publix, which will be operating with their regular hours. Albertsons will also be open as usual, as will Fred Meyer. Sam's Club will be open from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. local time.

Aldi will be open but operating with limited hours, and Safeway customers should check the hours of their local store. Trader Joe's will be open today, as will Whole Foods, but check with your local store for its exact hours.
